The IBDA Ranking Standard
Official Bujinkan Membership, Approved by Soke Hatsumi
Our dedication is to carry on the Bujinkan Arts into the future. We invite you to become a part of that journey, first as an official Member of the Bujinkan, and then we hope that you enroll in a dojo, online or distance learning program like thousands of other students worldwide.
You are welcome to become a member and not train with us. Obtaining a Bujinkan Membership with IBDA (International Bujinkan Dojo Association) is Official Bujinkan Membership, fully approved by now retired Soke Hatsumi. You can get a membership with us and train anywhere, with anyone in the Bujinkan.
Many years before fully retiring, Soke Hatsumi ended the Japan Hombu Dojo itself issuing memberships, and transferred the responsibility and authority of Bujinkan Memberships to the Senior DaiShihan who wanted to take on this responsibility. A few senior students like Doshi Richard Van Donk (IBDA director) accepted his request. Some choose to offer it only for their own dojo. We offer it worldwide through IBDA.

#2 NINJA VAULT
Inside the Members Area
What's a Ninja Vault? All kinds of cool stuff: free wallpapers, video training clips, audio stories and archives of various Shihan talks, photos from our Japan trips, photos of Soke Hatsumi and of Takamatsu Sensei, photos from Doshi Richard Van Donk events, histories, Soke lineages, and waza lists of the 9 Bujinkan schools: Togakure Ryu, Gyokko Ryu, Koto Ryu, Takagi Yoshin Ryu, Shinden Fudo Ryu, Kukishinden Ryu, Gyokushin Ryu, Kumogakure Ryu and Gikan Ryu. Plus training tips, Ninjutsu and self-improvement articles, newsletters, back issues of Shinken and Hanako magazines, archives of Doshi Van Donk, and much more.
The Ninja Vault gives you a better view of the vast scope of training in the arts. It is NOT the total education found in the Masters Course, AND it has many things that are NOT in any of the courses. We love adding to the vault, so let us know if you have something to add or what else you would like to see.
#3 IBDA UNIFORM PATCH
Wear Your Membership
An oval shoulder patch for your uniform. The International Bujinkan Dojo Association™ patch: beautiful gold metallic IBDA letters over a white globe, with a red Bujin circle containing the black Bujinkan kanji. Worn on the left shoulder of your uniform to signify your worldwide IBDA Bujinkan membership.
#4 RANK TESTING
Rank That Means Something
To test for rank with us you must be an enrolled student of an IBDA Dojo or enrolled in an IBDA Distance Learning Ninjutsu Course, and have a current IBDA Membership.
We offer our IBDA students rank certification kyu testing in several forms: in-person at the dojo, private sessions, seminars, a nearby IBDA dojo, virtual private sessions, or sent-in video feedback (Shodan will be in person). Your choice of pass/fail, or written detailed feedback on how to improve.
Our standardized Ninjutsu system shows you where you are in the learning process. You will know why you are at a certain level and exactly what you need to do to reach the next one. All ranking forms and testing requirements are in the IBDA Shodan no Maki Training Manual and in the Ninja Vault.
Some teachers rank other teachers' students after seeing them only once. We will NOT rank another teacher's student. A good, long-term teacher-student relationship is very important for a student's growth in the arts. Study everything you want, with whomever you want. Our goal is for the ranks you earn from us to actually mean something. You will feel proud to wear that belt, because you know you earned it.

A LIFETIME ON THE PATH
Doshi Richard Van Donk's Life-Long Dedication
OUR MISSION
The International Bujinkan Dojo Association™ Mission
Our IBDA mission is to provide students and new Buyu friends worldwide with the best knowledge of Ninjutsu / Budo Taijutsu possible, directly as it has been taught by Soke Hatsumi through Doshi Richard Van Donk. We offer a solid Ninjutsu standard that you can trust and be proud of. Your rank will have meaning, and you will know why you earned it, because your rank will be a true measurement of learned knowledge.
IBDA is committed to offering the most comprehensive Ninjutsu and Budo Taijutsu training available on the planet!
⚔ Start: Everyone starts at 9th Kyu and works their way to mastership. Each person decides the level and dedication of their journey, but our goal is to bring you all the way.
⚔ Shodan: Our first goal is to bring you to 1st degree black belt, where you learn a very solid overview of the entire Bujinkan teachings, just as Doshi Richard Van Donk learned from Soke Hatsumi.
⚔ Shidoshi: Next, train to be a Shidoshi (teacher of the Warrior Ways of Enlightenment). Learn Budo Taijutsu waza school by school, and go through a How To Teach Martial Arts course. Then we help you start a successful training group or full-time dojo.
⚔ Shihan: From there, we guide you to becoming a Shihan (role model for others), with teachings all the way to Judan.
Doshi Richard Van Donk was one of the first to be promoted to Godan, Judan and Jugodan Menkyo levels, and to receive the Fighting Spirit, Golden Dragon Medal, ShinGiTaiIchi and DaiShihan Awards. He is very committed to teaching teachers and to empowering every person he meets to be the very best human being they can be. Watch out for him though: he's a ninja with an ulterior motive! He truly wants to help you keep going, never stop improving yourself, and be a living example for others to follow. His hidden agenda is that by doing this, he's helping to make this world a better place for us all to live!
